The Artistes

Pt. Debi Prasad Chatterjee

Born in Calcutta, India, in a family of rich cultural and musical heritage, Pt. Debi Prasad Chatterjee developed a distinctive and unique style of his own through extensive training (Talim) from various teachers. He began early study with his elder brother, Pandit (Pt.) Biswanath Chatterjee, and later from Pt. Aparesh Chatterjee, another noted Sitar performer. In 1965, he began study with the famous Late Pt. Nikhil Banerjee. For the next twenty years, he studied intensely with Bangerjee as well as with Smt. Annapurna Devi. After the death of Pt. Banerjee in early 1986, he became the disciple of world famous teacher 'Swara Samrat' Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, whose control over the ragas has placed him among the top instrumentalists in India.

Pt. Debi Prasad Chatterjee has been honored with various titles and awards throughout his successful and illustrious career. Some of his key achievements include:
- Receiving the 'President's Award' in India.
- Becoming a National Scholar of Music for his contributions in Indian Classical Music.
- Claimed as the "Best Artist" by West Bengal Journalists' Association in 1974 & 1997.

Vishal Nagar

Vishal Nagar is a virtuoso of tabla, a set of tuned drums that are played in India, Pakistan, and elsewhere in Asia. Born into a family of musicians, he began to play tabla at a very early age. His initial training was with the late Ustad Latif Ahmed Khan, and later studied with Ustad Shamim Ahmed Khan. He also received special rhythmic training from his mother, the renowned Urmila Nagar-a noted Kathak dancer and vocalist.

Vishal plays in the style of the Delhi Gharana (school), and draws upon techniques of the various other tabla gharanas such as Ajrara and Farukhabad. He has also developed a precise and elegant style of padhant (the recitation of tabla rhythm patterns) that adds special excitement to his solo performances.

Vishal has been praised in the Indian press for his unique combination of a melodic tabla sound with a masterful command of rhythm. He is equally acclaimed for his performances as an accompanist of dancers, vocalists and instrumentalists, along with his performances as a soloist.
